About You
Somewhat enjoyable scheme, although the demands placed upon you a quite strict and you are expected to be available even though you're only on a vacation scheme however did teach a lot about city law!
With the people you were working closely with you were made to feel very involved and like family although some senior management did not regard you so much as family but just another worker really.
We were given a very significant amount of guidance throughout the scheme at the beginning in order to be able to cope with the work we undertook throughout the scheme. We were given a significant amount of freedom to do our work when required though.
The skills will be useful for a future career in commercial law and the departments I was working in however for my degree studies they were not very helpful as these were work skills and not academic skills.
The Company
The insight was very well structured with social events and workshops throughout my time with Clifford Chance, although it is difficult to judge later on in the scheme as you were able to undertake your own work.
The fun was part and parcel of the scheme with the social, cultural and sporting events organised by the firm. Although the work did sometimes get a bit tedious as we were unable to partake in any significant work for the firm.
The company invested largely in me with paying for very good social events and you were able to get involved in activities outside of work. Furthermore you were given your own office and a senior associate (supervisor) was always on hand to give advice.
The scheme gave me a good insight into a full time role as you were able to undertake real trainee work and interact with a wide array of people at the firm to gather your own view of what it will be like to work full time with Clifford Chance.
It gave me a good insight into the company's culture as you would working day to day with the firm and the people employed. However it may not be a complete view of the firm as it may have been covered over by the graduate recruitment team.
The scheme was somewhat helpful in that I decided that I wanted to pursue commercial law in my future career however I am undecided in whether Clifford Chance is the firm I wish to work for in the future.
Everything Else
I was paid £350 a week for my time.
Plenty of networking opportunities with the firm and the employees through social activities after work and generally during the day and over lunch. Additionally events organised by graduate recruitment were excellent at networking with employees.
They were generally very enjoyable especially the drinks and events organised by the firm, although the events could have been diversified to make them feel different from those generally hosted by law firms in the city.
There were many opportunities mainly through speaking to employees of the firm and presentations from graduate recruitment. Many opportunities such as sports teams and a wide area of activities to become involved in.
It is a very good way of finding out about the world of commercial law and the work that a top law firm does in the city. Also a way of finding out whether the work is worth the cons such as the long hours!
