About You
I found the insight extremely interesting and enjoyable. All the people, other interns and existing employees, were very friendly and helpful.
Everybody was willing to help and offer an insight into their career and the decisions they made to get where they are. People took an interest into who you were and what you were doing, this made you feel more involved in the organisation. Interns were given the opportunity to spend time within a variety of positions within the firm and meet a lot of different people.
The programme was organised extremely well, there was structured activities within the placement which meant that you experienced a variety of different roles within the organisation, however there was also opportunities for interns to spend more time within roles that they particularly enjoyed. There was a massive amount of support given by recruiters, if you had a problem or a concern they were always more than happy to talk it through with you and see if there was anything they could do to help.
I have never learnt more in a two week period than I did during the insight programme. Whilst there you are given the opportunity to speak to so many different people, all of which have a vast knowledge and experience which they are more than willing to share with you, no matter what level of financial knowledge you have you are taught at that level. The degree I am studying is relevant to the financial industry and being on this insight programme helped to explain a lot of what was being taught on my university course.
The Company
The insight week was structured very well, there was a variety of different events including spotlight talks, desk rotations and networking events all of these were organised in a schedule which you had access to.
There was never a dull moment during the internship, there was always something which you could be doing and everything that you were doing was interesting. I found the desk rotations particularly interesting, there was scheduled rotations and opportunities to schedule your own rotations.
We were given the opportunity to do an individual stock pitch, a group presentation and a 30 minute interview, with each of these tasks there was mentors there to help and guide you. During the spotlight talks there was opportunities to ask questions, in general everybody that you spoke to was interested in you and what you want to do.
The desk rotations were extremely insightful, employees explained their roles and what they did everyday, they explained what responsibilities each person had within these roles, and what kind of personal qualities were required to be successful within these roles.
There was a lot of emphasis put on explaining the culture within Goldman Sachs, we had talks on this and after finishing the insight I came away with a clear image of the company.
I had thought that I wanted to work within Sales and Trading for sometime, however it is always difficult to know unless you have had the opportunity to try. The insight programme not only confirmed that I did indeed want to follow a career within sales and trading, but it actually made me want it more, the whole experience was incredible.
Everything Else
As an intern you were looked after financially very well.
There was networking events within the organisation, there was also opportunities to meet people at many different levels within the organisation including partners and managing directors.
They were very well organised and were enjoyable.
There are opportunities to volunteer within the community, Goldman Sachs employees are encouraged to take time to do this even though it means missing a day of work.
The insight programme was interesting, enjoyable and really fun.
