The Role
A lot more than I initialy thought I would, it wasn't a struggle at all
Incredibly, the level of responsibilty given to you was much more than anyone else I've spoken to on placement
Although they were very busy they almost always managed to find time to teach/guide
The level of work that came to our section of the site wasn't constant and sometimes it was busier than others, but the managers get round this by handing out projects to complete in spare time
A lot, I was trusted with a lot more things than I thought I would be, for example my project was very expensive and I helped purchase a robot for one of the systems
Not only did I get all the transferrable lab and job skills I needed, but also I became an adult while I was on placement and this will serve me well in my final year at university
The Company
Everyone was friendly with everybody else and plenty of other activites outside of work were organised
There was a definite plan for me and I know what I was supopsed to be doing early on, the training period perhaps lasted a little too long though
I really feel like I have developed this year and the training itself will be part of that. There was also optional extra training like giving presentations and working with customers
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
I would quite happily return but hopefully to a different position with a bit more chemistry behind it
The Culture
They made the placement
I commuted from Nottingham where I am a student, but the reviews from the other students on life in Derby was very good
Derby has an ok nightlife, but Nottingham is well worth the trip
The sports and social club organised plenty of events from hiking in the highlands to a weekly climbing group. They were also open to suggestions for other events and this was all subsidised
