The Role
The year has gone very quickly! I was given much more authority than I would have expected.
There is a good laid back atmosphere in the office however it took a while for it to feel 'like family'
I was given excellent support when I had to step up and lead my department for a month
Usually quite busy. Was a little slow moving at the start but if you show willingness and capability you will be given more interesting work to do
I was given a great deal of responsibility. I led my department and the Community Involvement Team for over a month and was also responsible for the inductions of more senior HR staff. I also got to carry out investigations which led to disciplinaries.
Taking a placement year was the perfect opportunity to find out which areas of the job I am most interested in. I could then develop skills in these area which will be beneficial when applying for Graduate roles
The Company
Atmosphere was friendly and laid back but also could be serious when necessary
Placement set up was good. Work objectives were set and a bursary is awarded at the end of the year provided you meet certain criteria.
Cummins paid for all the students to attend a variety of training sessions such as time management and dealing with difficult people. I would have liked to have gone on more job specific training though.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
I am going to apply for a graduate role with Cummins if I am not offered one.
The Culture
All placement students got on really well together
Darlington is incredibly cheap to live in!
Would go further afield for a night out - Newcastle or York
I cycle a lot so I joined the local club - there is plenty to do within 10 miles or so but it will take some looking for.
