    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Compared to part time employment this placement was very enjoyable. Once you get over the early mornings ang get into a routine it's fine. Good working hours (8:30-4:30) and an extremely positive working environment, something I think that shouldn't be underestimated.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was given alot of responsibility, basically treated like another engineer but also lots of support. The work I was doing was relevent and fed directly into the overall work. Any work I carried out was taken seriously and reviewd just as any other engineer...was never given any work 'just for the sake of it'

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Huge support. My supervisors were very proactive in making me aware of the training and oppertunities available and gave me alot of freedom to gain experience of areas I found interesting. Throughout the year I was given excellent support and guidance on my work. CTT also does the MPDS scheme, which basically contributes a year towards gaining chartership....not something every company does.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to nature of the overall project and work I took on this ranged quite a bit. Sometime extremely busy and at other times quite steady. Found this a good thing however as it kept things interesting. Never felt like I couldn't approach my manager and ask for more/less work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Proabably one of the things I was most surprised about. I was given as much responsibility as a graduated engineer, however had the benefit of more support, so never felt overwhelmed. Was able to work very independently and never persued on what I was working on at a specific moment in time.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Invaluable experience. From the training I was able to develop the technical side of things quite a bit, seeing some of the stuff taight in uni in the real world realy helps you understand things better, not to mention make it feel worth while. However I think the biggest advantage comes from developing your interpersonal skills, organisation and engineering approach. Basically the things that can't be taight in a classroom.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Office environment was very supportive and very friendly. Anyone I ever approached was more than helpful and I never felt like I was being treated any differently from another engineer. I wouldn't say it's fun but hey ho that's work for you.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This is a pretty big company which has a pretty structured approach. I was setup with all the hardware/software required quickly and given the same privalages as anyother engineer. One thing that would have been good would be some support in finding accommodation before starting, although they will put other students in the same boat in contact.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Already said but training and development second to none. Huge amount of training courses available and the MPDS scheme is great to have. Some external courses aswell such as advanced axcel etc. which is useful.

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. Basically for all the reasons I've just written about. It being an International compnay is a big bonus aswell. Quite a bit of oppertunity for travel, as in visiting different sites. Not quite sure on permanent positions abroad though

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah pretty good. The year I'm doing placment has quite a few students (about 7 ot 8) so there's a good number. Huddersfield itself isn't great for going out, more of a /bar town if i'm honest. Leeds is 20min away on the train though and it's a decent night out.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living is average in terms of accommodation. Monthly rent is usually around 300-400 per month if you do a bit of looking around. Bus/train transport is a rip off though, definitely something to consider when looking for accommodation.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Like I said nightlife in here is ok but Leeds is pretty close for a night out. Manchester is also about 45min away so definitly could be done. Huddersfield has a uni but you wouldn't know it at the weekend.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There's a Sports and Social Club which always has stuff going on. Cycling is pretty big here so there's always people doing that. Quite an easy place to get involved in stuff outside of work. Pretty decent gym here aswell which is only a tenner a month.
