The Role
The placement scheme is very well structured and rewards initiative.
I was lucky enough to be in a young team with which I could bond quickly.
My direct manager and colleagues always made time to answer my questions. As part of the scheme, you get assigned a mentor too (in my case, a director). I found the guidance given by my mentor and colleagues very valuable.
Very busy at first when I was trying to get to grips with the job. After I optimised/automated most of the reports, I had enough free time to start my own projects.
Most of my reports went to either directors, the MD or decision-makers in Europe. I felt that most of my work had a real impact in one area of the business or another.
I think that my degree helped me in this job and not the other way around. I have, however, learned a lot about time management, office ettiquette, presentation skills and most importantly Excel and VBA (all of which will be quite valuable in my future career).
The Company
I was lucky enough to land in a very social team on the "cool floor" (Griffin House - 3rd floor). There is rarely any tension, even when all of us are really busy. The atmosphere is usually relaxed and banterous.
We had 2 open days to meet the team and other undergraduates and search for a house to live in. I would have liked a lot more time to search for a house. We then came back a week and a half later for our handover (2 weeks period with the person you're replacing). Workshops and training sessions are dotted throughout your placement.
We had a few training sessions for presentation skills, Excel and safe driving. There is still some room for improvement when it comes to the quantity and quality fo the training sessions.
Company Parties/Events
I'm not sure if they are recruiting next year, but I've established myself as a very reliable and able candidate. I was also astute enough to impress the right people.
The Culture
With so many students on placement, clicks will invariably get formed. We tried to do 1-2 outings every week with our little group though.
Cheap housing, cheap entertainment.
Bad. You can play decent and cheap pool in galaxy. Recommend going to nearby places such as Watford, St. Albans, London and Milton Keynes.
Quite a lot of volunteering going on. My manager was also very supportive when I wanted to start my own projects.
