The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the placement and I was particularly impressed with the speed in which I was gaining responisibility and subsequent experience. I loved the pressure, responsibility and acclaim that came with acting as a store manager. I definitely made the right choice in terms of whom to do my placement with.
All the staff were very open and civilised to me, even when I was getting on their backs to work harder!! It did help though that I already knew a few of the employees from around town so that definitely helped me settle in sooner than it would have otherwise.
Management were very helpful and always open for me if I needed to discuss of check something. They also were very free to let me work off my own initiative rather than constantly monitoring my actions and decisions which definitely helped me learn more and leave with a totally more rewarding experience.
Each day was different and no two days were the same. I would go into the store each morning not knowing what may happen by 6pm that night. I liked that aspect of it - it was refreshing and riveting!
Almost from the off I was given big responsibility in playing a huge part in running and managing my store which was quite nervewracking but also totally worth it!
I plan to return to Lidl after my education so I have already started my career with them so they definitely are skills for the whole of my career.
The Company
I really found that I felt really comfortable in the store environment and that I could easily manage cameraderie well in the store. At times there were a few problems with employees not pulling their weight and not meeting targets but other than that it was brilliant and loadsa fun.
The whole placement was incredibly well set up and ran and it is much like the whole Lidl corporation: perfect.
They invest a hell of a lot in their placement students - we are trained to store manager level and beyond!
Above 25 days holiday
I did have a word with the district manager who said that they would be in contact when my education had finished so it looks very promising!
The Culture
I knew a few of the employees from school and family friends so I wasn't short of anyone to chat to on breaks or to get the general feeling of the employees in the store.
I lived with ma and pa so it was cheap and cheerful for me. I got to spend my wage on whatever I liked which was brilliant!
The town centre is pretty small so there's a single street of bars and a club which I'm comfortable with but if you came from a big city or something you might be shocked at the lack of choice.
The store didin't organise anything but I saw a few of the lads at the weekend down town.
