About You
The start of the day was a little bit awkward as nobody knew what to expect. As the day went on, after 'breaking the ice', the insight was thoroughly enjoyable.
All the hosts were very welcoming and enthusiastic. EY recognises that eash person has different personalities, and made an emphasis that there the firm was very accommodating.
Almost all of the advice given was quite general, though helpful nonetheless. Very specific and relevant (individual) feedback was given after taking part in a group case study exercise.
The case study was very realistic, with interaction with 'clients'. This developed business skills, and feedback was especially useful. Probably not much help for my degree (Economics) but certainly relevant on entering work.
The Company
The day was planned out well with presentations and activities separated by breaks. Pace was fast and demanding, but not stressful.
Atmosphere was quite laid back and relaxed, apart from when taking part in the case study exercise which is 'client' facing.
Feedback on activities was quite thorough to aid with personal development, but there was nothing of a technical nature.
Staff from various business areas were 'group facilitators', it was extremely insightful talking to them to find out what they typically do. The most striking aspect was the relative they had in managing their own work.
A presentation was given at the beginning outlining different operating divisions and their functions, however no information was given with respect to company hierachy.
The day was more of an insight into the firm than an insight into a career.
Everything Else
Travel expenses were reimbursed.
Networking with staff present was relatively easy with the many breaks during the day, however this also meant that the number of staff you could meet was restricted from 6 to 8.
As the networking opportunities weren't very formal, conversations tended to stray into the direction of life stories... However this does not mean that you cannot network effectively!
Aside from sports and musical instruments, I found out that there were sometimes departmental outings/trips.
Why not go and see?
