The Role
My placement was varied with lots of different aspects and learnings. However, in the start this can be a lot of information to get your head round.
The technical team were incredibly welcoming and help was always there if I needed it, however the wider team were more distant and I don't think appreciated my work.
My line manager was very supportive and no question was too silly, she always had time for my development and I really enjoyed working with her.
At Tesco you are always very busy and there is possibly much too for an undergraduate to take on, however help was always offered.
My manager left on maternity leave and there was a gap of a couple of weeks before there was replacement cover, for those couple of weeks I was basically running my own category!
My placement opened my eyes to the commercial world, there was a detailed undergraduate programme in which there was a lot of relevant training which I will take back to uni and further.
The Company
There was already a great atmosphere in the office with a constant buzz. However, you still had enough quiet time to get on with your tasks.
The Undergraduate team were very well organised however, moving into the category there seemed to be a lack of communication, this should be improved going forward.
There was a lot of training over the year with key sessions in Presentational skills, communication and ethics.
Company Parties/Events
Tesco are a huge organisation there is a massive amount of potential for Graudates. Time and money are invested into the Graduate scheme with 200 graduates being employeed last year across the business.
The Culture
Most people really enjoyed having a placement student on the team and you are fully included on team days and nights out.
Just outside of London is very expensive to live, the salary just about covers your basic living costs.
There were a few socials and nights out but not as many as some other teams. The split varies heavily by category.
Not much opportunity to extend your development outside of work.
