The Role
I found it hard to begin with as it took a while for my project work to pick up but this soon changed when the project got underway in earnest and since then I have thoroughly enjoyed work at Siemens Magnet Technology. The work has always been interesting and challenging. I have had excellent support from colleagues and supervisors at Siemens who have always been generous with their time with me.
I feel I have been given projects to work on which have a direct impact on the wider business at Siemens Magnet Technology and as such feel very valued by my colleagues.
My supervisors have always been generous with their time in offering me guidance and support.
For the first month or two I was not very busy and this was difficult. But after that, my project picked up pace and I have been enjoyably busy since.
I feel the work I have undertaken hs been important for wider projects at Siemens and I have been allowed the freedom to decide how to progress my projects.
I have learned a great deal about superconductivity which should assist me with some of my studies next year. But more importantly I have developed experimental skills which I have will be invaluable in a future career in Physics.
The Company
Colleagues were very friendly but the office was a very proffessional environment
I think to begin with it was uncertain what projects I would work on and this meant the placement was slow to get started. But once underway, the work was well structured.
I received training in LabView, Visio, Excel and hands on experience with workshop tools and laboratory equipment. The firm also invested heavily in the projects I was working on, enabling me to carry out my experiments in a thorough manner.

I do not know whether I have a chance of future employment as I have not had that discussion with my manager but Siemens would be a fantastic place to work.
The Culture
There was a social scene but as I was commuting two hours each way for work, I wasn't able to get involved much.
I did not live in the area so cannot really comment although I gather Oxford is a rather expensive place to live and socialise.
I cannot comment as I didn't live in Oxford.
Siemens had a great system called Your Life which organised activities outside of work. I didn't get involved but the opportunity was always there.
