The Role
I have had a great opportunity to work for a large worldwide company. The placement seemed well structured and was altogether a good experience. As far as know it has been a yearly improvement over the last years. My feedback was also asked this year to improve it even further.
Work is conducted within teams that work on separate projects. Within the teams there is a very close and personal communication that gets established, from the project managers to the undergraduate engineers. On a further extent even the division managers are easily accessible and friendly.
As stated previously the whole placement was very well structured and support and guidance was supplied even without asking at the very beginning. If further support was needed this was very easily obtainable.
Most of the time you are reasonably busy and are not expected to do extensive amount of work for the given time period. Even overtime was available if you were wanting to do it. There is always something to do, but there is no pressure to do more than is reasonable.
I think that during the placement even from the very beginning you are given quite a lot of responsibility, for a new starter. This increases even further over time as long as you prove yourself to be trustworthy.
Most of the skill I have learned from this placement could potentially be useful in most engineering type jobs. Of course there was also training for company specific tools and software which would not help in other areas, but have been essential for work in the company.
The Company
Most people in the office are kind and friendly. There is a very nice working atmosphere in the office. Have not had a bad experience during the whole placement. There are also out of office events organised every other week for an informal get together.
The placement was very well organised. Starting from the first day there was a set plan for training and inductions and after this work on projects was commenced. If requested, even work in other departments than engineering could be asked for and included in the placement.
The company did invest in training and development as much as was necessary for the placement and the work done during it. This extended a bit further, but mostly involved the company interests as one would expect.
National Travel
Above 25 days holiday
As far as I know now there is a reasonable chance of being offered a future job opportunity at the company. I would strongly consider the offer if it will be made.
The Culture
All of the placement students have been friendly and collective events have been organised every once in a while.
The area I lived in was not too cheap and while socialising was not expensive, it was not aimed at young people or students. There were locations nearby that would accommodate for this.
There was no nightlive as such in Ashby, but there are always cities and town a short drive away.
Again the opportunities in Ashby were not brilliant, but there are other places to go to.
