The Role
When I started I didn't think I'd enjoy, however now I only have a few weeks left I am not looking forward to leaving.
GIS at Illumina are a really close team, everyday there is something new to laugh about.
My on site manager has supported me whenever I have an issue. My manager in the US has provided any advice I need via email or telephone.
There are some quiet days and some busy days, but if I'm bored I can always find work to do.
I was left to manage the backups, but given support whenever I needed. I also had plenty of projects to manage.
I have gained an understanding of systems that I didn't know existed but that are used in lots of companies.
The Company
When it's busy or something has gone down then the office is very work focused, however there is always time for a laugh and even the odd pub lunch.
Illumina have previous experience of placement students and well set up to deal with them.
I have had a lot of the training full time employees get, learning about things outside of IT.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
There has been talk of possible future jobs within Illumina in different rolls.
The Culture
Illumina has a social committee that organise events throughout the year. Plus the agency through with placement students are employed organises regular outings to cinema, meals out, etc.
Socialising was easy, Cambridge is only 10 minutes away and London less than an hour. However the cost of living can be expensive depending on the choice of location
The area Illumina is based in is the middle of the countryside, but Cambridge is 10 minutes away.
If you look around there are opportunities, but they aren't always obvious or easy to find.
