The Role
The placement is varied and the training thorough – head and shoulders above what other retailers offer!
I always felt valued while on placement. Senior management, for example, take the time out to talk to you and provide advice.
We had regular training sessions throughout the year and in between were looked after by our RTM (Regional Training Manager) who is the first port of call for all issues. All support and guidance could be attained through these channels.
There is never a dull day in Lidl! Whether it is during your training period (you train in all areas of the company for three months) or during a specific 'module' you can always find something to get stuck in to.
I was treated in all areas I visited as equivalent to a full time member of the team. Therefore, responsibility was given quite quickly e.g access to company information, running events, holding safes etc.
The development of managerial skills is the most transferable skill a placement student will attain. The in-depth departmental knowledge of how a company on this scale operates however will be invaluable for future studies. Seeing and working in each department creates an understanding that can not be learned from a text book!
The Company
Not always an office but the general atmosphere in the company is very positive and forward thinking.
The placement is broken down into four parts. The first quarter is training in each department. Then the final three are optional choices in Sales (stores) the warehouse or the property department. From day one the structure was mapped out and planned and we were all fully informed as to what the year ahead would look like.
Three months at the start and regular training throughout. Three appraisals at set times also to point you in the right direction if needed.

The company is a great one to work for and I could not advocate it more.
The Culture
There was 15 of us across the country and we met up a number of times for training / head office work. These proved a great opportunity to exchange experiences.
Lidl aim to put you in an area close to where you live - I was based at home so the salary is pure profit.
I live in a town. We have a pub!
