The Role
Good level of training, could get to grips with the content and always had someone to go to if there were problems. Once I was capable of working alone, I was given the freedom to work independently and manage myself. By the end of the year it was starting to feel a little repetitive, though.
I was relied on for high level work, consulted as the expert in my area of focus. I felt like my contributions were really making a difference and the workplace benefitted for it.
I was encouraged to work alone, but there was always someone to ask if you were unsure and the leaders were happy to explain even small points in detail to ensure I understood them.
Workload varied dramatically depending on the day and on the amount going on. Most of the time there were small projects to fill the time, but they were not so interesting as the normal day-to-day role.
More responsibility than I expected, when our team was reduced in size I was expected to take on a leading role in certain areas, working independantly and only reporting back to my managers.
I drastically increased my knowledge of the industry, but my degree is non-specific so I'm not sure I'll be going into that area in future. However, my skills in researching, organisation and working in a team were also developed and they'll be applicable to anything I do in future.
The Company
Great people, great socialising. We would go out for lunch or out in the evening fairly regularly. Everyone was very friendly and easy to get on with, everyone wanted to help and would take time out to talk and answer questions.
Mostly very well. I had a few issues finding housing, due to starting the internship very soon after my exams finished, but I was in the minority. First pay check came through early, which was great when trying to cover deposits and rent. Large intern culture at the factory probably helps.
Multiple training courses, online training directory where we could pick and choose courses to suit us. Lots of opportunities to learn more.

I would like to work within GE in future, although hopefully within a different branch as the product line I was on is not the most interesting to me.
The Culture
Large intern group which was great for making friends, largely we were left to organise on our own but as long as people did that we would go out pretty regularly. Also great atmosphere for meeting and making friends with people around the same age.
Student city, so lots of opportunity for cheap nights out and cheaper housing. Huge variety in cost of living in particular, really everyone could find a place for the price they wanted to pay.
In the city, the nightlife was great. The actual workplace was a short drive away, so people who lived closer to the work office had some problems getting in and out of town on night's out - though usually they could find another intern to lend them a floor to sleep on!
Lots of volunteering opportunities, company sports and music clubs running weekly. Occasional company outings to events such as go-karting, or company providing tickets to sports games.
