About You
It was a really interesting insight into the oil & gas industry as a whole, and into what Schlumberger do as a company. It gave us a detailed insight into the different businesses of the companies and we were able to job shadow which gave you an idea of what the engineers do on a day-to-day basis. There were challenges involved which gave you an idea as to what problems the engineers face and how they would go about solving them, which was really interesting, and there were even prizes for the winning group! Everyone was really friendly and helpful and I fully enjoyed the insight programme.
Everyone was so friendly and helpful, you were able to meet so many different members of staff who were able to give you more information.
We were aware of what we were doing the whole time, for the group challenges full instructions were given and we had the support of group managers to guide us through the challenge. Whilst job shadowing all safety precautions were taken and we were always with someone from the company. After the placement we have received a mentor to help support us through the rest of our university career and to be a point of contact within the company.
The group challenge was a real example of what the engineers do on a day-to-day basis and it's that sort of practical problem solving that is invaluable as an engineer. The programme also provided an insight into an industry in which I would have otherwise known little about. Any experience like this is so useful for future professional life.
The Company
We always knew what we were doing and when, we received a timetable before the event and I think it was structured well.
There was certainly a lot to keep us busy and although there were quite a few powerpoints, these were all really useful in finding out about what the company do. I was genuinely surprised with how much every single person I met within the company was so enthusiastic about their job no matter how demanding it was and there was definitely a fun atmosphere within the company. I was really lucky to be with a wonderful group of girls which definitely helped!
Considering it was only a two day insight programme, I felt like the company had invested a lot into informing us about the company and providing us with interesting tasks and challenges. We were also lucky to stay in a wonderful hotel and have wonderful food!
We were informed of all the different job possibilities within the company and what each of these roles do. We were also told what we would need to go into a certain role, for example, to go into a research role a PhD is usually required.
By not only learning about what they do but also taking part in challenges which involved problems that the company had encountered in real life it gave us quite an accurate insight into what is involved. We also learnt how the job roles are quite flexible which allows you to experience lots of different areas of the company and never get bored!
It gave a wonderful insight into both the oil and gas industry as a whole and the different job roles which has allowed me to become interested in both the industry and certain roles within the company. I would definitely recommend participating in such an insight, as oil and gas was something I knew next to nothing about but now I feel much more informed and even if you decide on things like this that it's not something you want to go into, at least you've found that out before you find yourself taking a job in the industry!
Everything Else
Reimbursed for travel expenses and accommodation and meals were all paid for by the company!
I've never met so many people from one company in two days! We were constantly meeting people from different areas of the business and also met people from up and down the country who came specifically for the insight programme. It was also really interesting to meet placement year students as it's made me consider doing one.
We were able to socialise with other attendees and company members during all meals, and group tasks and job shadowing.
There are loads of activities that staff can get involved in, including several sports teams.
Such a wonderful experience, would recommend to anyone!
