The Role
Very enjoyable, the projects I worked on and experience I gained were very relevent to my course at University.
I received lots of praise and positive feedback from my team during projects. This made completing them much more rewarding and made me feel like I was making a impact on the department.
My manager and supervisor were extremely helpful. I was often left to my own devices as this is the most effective way to learn in my situation, although they were always on hand to guide me towards a solution.
I was never bored and always had a project on the go!
I was given the chance to manage responsibility for my own projects which were relatively beneficial to the department however they weren't critical to the company.
I have developed a sound understanding of coding Python during my placement and have a more in-depth practical knowledge of diesel engines. I am now making new software for the company as a final year project!
The Company
As a professional engineering environment my surrounding colleagues were often extremely focused and busy however they would always be willing to lend a hand when they were free! You develop a need to ask for cake whenever any special events arise!!
During my placement I got to experience two different departments (of my choosing) each for 6 months and work on a variety of projects. We had single placement manager throughout our 12 months who could deal with any general questions or concerns.
Caterpillar cares about its employees and their personal development. Not only did I attend a variety of training courses (from taking engines apart to excel) I had to set myself goals and record my attainment!
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I have learnt some valuable skills in the company and I was very keen to continue working for them over the summer, however due to other commitments this wasn't possible. Although no offers have been made, I hope to return to the company in the future.
The Culture
From day 1 caterpillar encourages socialising amongst the placements.
I lived about 30 minutes from Peterborough and found rent to be extremely cheap compared to Brighton (My University)!
Peterbrough has lots of bars and clubs like any big city!
My department had regular meals to socialise. There was also various events held by a number of groups outside of work (Young professinals, social clubs etc), if you seek it out I'm sure you could be busy nearly every night of the week!
