The Role
The job wasn't what I thought it would be. I was in Indirect Tax which is heavily law based which I did not expect. The work was very qualitative which does not suit me. I also did not enjoy the culture of the firm.
The ones I got to work on projects with made me feel valued but others in my team that I did not work with still feel like strangers.
I feel I could have been given a lot more support by my supervisors. Only at the end of my placement did I begin to understand how things work in my department.
I was usually under-utilized.
Responsibility is not given to junior staff members in relation to client work. I did take charge in the office's CSR involvement though.
I didn't enjoy my placement but it was worthwhile. The skills I have learnt will greatly assist me in my degree. I had to do a lot of writing which I feel will help in my essays. I have also learnt a lot about recruitment and the working world which was a big eye-opener. I would stronly recommend students to do a year in industry.
The Company
Ocasionally conversations would crop up but usually it was silent apart from people tapping away on their keyboards.
The placement is designed so you start in September with the graduates. I asked to start in uly instead as it was more convenient to me and the firm agreed to this. However, it would have been much better if I had started in September as my induction wasn't until September which made the first couple of months difficult. I was never sure who I should contact about different issues as I had so many contacts which was confusing to me and they didn't liaise with one another.
I attended three residential courses to develop my technical skills and one residential course to develop my soft skills. I also came into work early every other Thursday for extra VAT training.

I wouldn't go back as a graduate because the firm and the job role I had were not right for me. For the right person though, it could be a brilliant job as it has a clear path of progression so it wouldn't take long to become a senior member of the firm.
The Culture
All graduates join together and it is a bit similar to university as every year more grads join so year groups exist and they tend to socialise together. There was often events going on and I often socialised with my tax peers who were in my year.
Leeds is a major city so it isn't cheap but it is Northern so not as expensive as down South.
Leeds has a good nightlife with plenty of bars, clubs and resturants.
Work didn't provide any opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. Leeds has a lot to offer though.
