The Role
I highly enjoyed my time at RBC. I've felt very part of my department and the company as a whole - I have attended all team meetings as well as social events organised by members in my department - and have not once felt isolated during this 8-9 week internship.
RBC has organised the placement very well in terms of making us interns feel welcomed in the company and helping me personally to get the most out of the experience of working in an investment bank (by arranging trips/social events and organising high profile members within RBC to speak to the interns).
Both the HR department and employees at RBC have supported me every step of the way throughout my internship. They've made me feel welcome from day one and given me great suppport during and after my placement.
Although my main role during this internship has been working in Operational Risk department (Back office), I have had the opportunity to sit with those on the trading floor (Front office e.g. Money Markets, FIC Strategy & Research).
I worked closely with my Line manager on a project. I was responsible for managing data and graphs. I was also soley responsible for taking minutes on a weekly basis during departmental meetings
One thing I have gained most from this placement is confidence. This has been developed through Project work - presenting to an audience. The project has also enabled me to develop my organisational skills as well as my team working skills. Also my knowledge in the global financial sector has increased greatly –general knowledge & historical events that have affected financial institution - which will serve me well in my degree course and in future employment
The Company
The general atmosphere was great. My collegues were very approachble and there was a great balance between work and socialising
Throughout my 7 week internship, I feel that the placement has been very well organised. The HR department has done a great job in organising events for us interns. For example, each week all interns attend Business presentations, where HR department invites heads of business areas within RBC (such as Head of Global Investment Bank) to give us a full overview of the business operations within RBC’s London office. This has given me a good understanding of all the business areas within RBC. Also, HR department has arranged a series of trips and workshops in other companies (including ICAP, Bloomberg and LME) which has given me greater insight into systems use by Traders and a broader understanding of what other financial institutions within the city do. Although my main role during this internship has been working in Operational Risk department (Back office), I have had the opportunity to sit with those on the trading floor (Front office e.g. Money Markets, FIC Strategy & Research).
Many trips, events and presentations were organised by RBC to enable us to develope skills.
Flexi Time
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Have already discussed with my line manager the opportunity to return to RBC to do another summer placement.
The Culture
Us interns were always in contact and socialing with each other. RBC made this easier by organising social networking events during our placement.
