The Role
I found the work generally inetersting and challenging but did find it hard to ajust to working a full week and sometimes the work became a bit monotonous.
I felt well valued, I was asked to do work for people and asked about the results myself so I felt like people trusted me to do a good job and speak for myself
My supervisor was very supportive in training me to become skilled in my working area and encourage me to be more independant in making my own decisions and experimental plans and interpret results on my own. I would have appreciated more support in focusing on my project work.
It varied. I had period of being really busy and period where I had to fill me time doing background reading etc. However I never felt pressured to work longer hours in busy period so overall the balance was good
My the end I was given charge of my groups part of one programme so I felt in control of my work towards this - I was allowed to attend meetings about the work on my own and was able to explain and answer questions about what I had done.
I feel much better equiped to carry out my third year project once back at university, I feel I have a good idea of what it is like to work in industry and my lab/experimental planning and interpretation skills have improved more here than they had after 2 year of my degree.
The Company
The office was quite quiet but had a friendly atmosphere of hard work.
We were given an IP student co-ordinator who helped organise jounal clubs and guest speakers. We each had a designated supervisor. We had a familiarisation day a few months before we started to introduce us properly to the departmenta nd company.
I was encouraged to give presentations and even present a poster. The department set up journal clubs and guest speakers to try and increase what we got out of our year here
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
A graduate scheme was advertised however there was not a scheme for research and development (which I work in) so the likelyhood of getting a job directly from the placement is low. However being able to write about my experinec on my CV may help me once I have finished my degree
The Culture
There were loads of IP students so I had a great group of friends and we did loads of things together throughout the year
Not too expensive unless visiting London.
ONly one club but quite a few pubs if you just fancy a drink!
There were a few sports clubs and choirs/orchestras to join in Stevenage or if prepared to travel to LOndon there would be loads of things to join!
