The Role
I had an excellent time with GSK and learned a great deal about working in industry.
I bonded very quickly with all the members of my department, and could openly talk to them about any issues i was experiencing
I was given excellent support by team members and managers alike.
Working within manufacturing, you are often very busy; however, I see this as a positive. It definitely beats sitting around bored all day and means you get to be involved with a lot of different things
I was given lots of responsibility from day 1. I was treated like any other team member, but I could say no/ask for advice should i have struggled with anything
My placement at GSK has taught me a great deal about how to function as part of an industrial team. I feel the soft skills I have developed will stand me in good stead whatever direction I chose to go after finishing my degree.
The Company
Nothing terribly exciting but my colleagues were all nice to chat to
As i was one of teh first students my department had had, there was room for improvident in this category. However, I still feel i had a reasonable amount of structure
I was allowed to visit a variety of sites and attend seminars etc if there was something that appealed to me
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The Grad scheme is highly sought after, doing a placement year means you get a fast-track to this scheme
The Culture
There was an excellent social scene but, this obviously depends on the students there at the time
Being near London, housing is quite expensive. Still had enough money left over to socialise at least once/twice a week
Very near London!
There are lots of sporting facilities round about, and team events were encouraged.
