The Role
Whilst on my placement i was provided with some great opportunities, i experienced lots of fun and exciting things that i will remember for years to come.
My team were a VERY close knitt team and they always encouraged me to make suggestions, valued my oppinion and trusted my abilities.
Every member of my team were dedicated to developing my skills whilst on my placement and all supported and guided me throughly. There were times due to the changes in my team that there was less time for feedback or developmental discussions than i would have wanted but generally when they did happen they were extreamly worthwhile and embedded into the next few months
There were times where there was never enough hours in the day, i was managing alot of different tasks at the same time and all with tight deadlines but this is how i like to work. There were obviously times where there was less to do so i would say it was a perfect balance, almost.
It look some time for my team/manager to trust my ability or suggestions (about 9 months) but once i gained that trust i had the opportunity to run different projects and delegate to colleagues. This was great, defiently didnt feel like a placement student by the end and was a shame to leave just as my role was gaining some real depth!
I genuinly feel that the experiences i learnt whilst on my placement are valuble to my future career and completion of my degree. I couldnt have asked to learn greater skills and develop as many skills as i have and will treasure these.
The Company
CAKE was always available, not good for the waistline but created a really friendly envirnment. We also 'hot desked' which meant always speaking to new people, it definelty wasnt a silent office!
Really well organised, i think it helped that there were about 100 Placement students in my building, shows that GSK know what they are doing when it comes to onboarding and development. My manager had had lots of students before me so she knew exactly what to do with me/
I was always encouraged to spend time on 'my learning' and take part in different modules. they also paid for me to take part in a few development tools which provided me with various reports on things like working style or future developement areas.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
I would love to go back, i have already applied for the Graduate fastrack and have had various conversations with my manager about future job prospects.
The Culture
Due to the high amount of placement students there was always alot going on iside of work and outside. Highlight of the placement students event has to be a boat party along the river thames!
Living in London is VERY expensive especially when your on a placement student wage. However i felt that i wanted to make the most of my time and was always busy doing various things! I guess everyones social life or experience differed depending on how much they were willing to spend or their personal financial situation.
Brentford isnt exactly THE place to go, there are a couple of local pubs to go to after work or for work evenings but i lived within Zone 3 in london which meant i had access to the whole of london which was great!!
Yes, i dont think i had many weekends free during the entire year!
