The Role
I enjoyed the placement as I got on with everyone in the labs very well and found the general work interesting. I would say it was a good jumping off point to see what the pharmaceutical industry is like but I would opt for a less routine job after experiencing this year.
I always felt valued by my colleagues as I was given real responsibilities and work to complete. I was always treated like a memeber of staff and not just a placement student.
I was given support throughout my placement by two managers, both of which assisted me whenever I asked for help. I would say I was also supported through my placement by the members of staff in the labs who would provide guidance for work tasks when my managers were unavailable.
Day to day varies, there was always something to do if you told your manager you were having a slow day.
I was responsible for running lab tests and analysing results to release products to the market.
I was trained in a specific lab and mastered the technique, I was also given background on how the test worked. I was trained for a month before I could run the test by myself and was signed off when I said I was confident to run it. I was trained in good lab practice and good manufacturing practice but I also learnt other skills ie. report writing, project skills, presenting, analysing data, investigation work and experimental planning.
The Company
I had a great lab team! I made very good friends and this made the experience so much better, it would not have been the same without them.
It was set up well, I had a set trainer to train me in my placement before I did anything by myself. I was given projects and different objectives to hit at certain stages of the placement.
GSK invests a lot of time and effort into training, I was given the same training they'd give a permanent employee in everything for safety to actual testing practice,
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
I would definitely consider working for GSK again they take care of their permanent employees well.
The Culture
My site had a small number of IP's so it was a bit slow!
The north is cheap for rent, petrol and alcohol.
It is a bit slow in Barnard Castle but we went to Newcastle and Durham a lot! Everyone made an effort and it was good :)
This site is in the middle of nowhere you definitely need to drive!
