The Role
Definitely enjoyed my work placement at GSK. Plenty of opportunities are available for development in areas you wish to pursue. The placement is what you make it but if you have a good interest in your role you will enjoy it.
My opinion was valued by my colleagues and taken into consideration. At GSK this was the feeling from the very start of the placement. Being placed straight into an active role meant that you had a sense of achievement when completing tasks. Colleagues would ensure I understood what I was doing.
Lots of support was available from both team members and management. Even if you are at the bottom of the ladder as a student, management welcome your questions and discussion. Personal development plans are updated regularly to ensure you're on track. Advice is always available and I found it to be supportive and helpful.
In my role I was kept fairly busy, of course there were quiet days. I think generally the balance was right as its good to be busy especially when trying to develop yourself. The company will give you a good standing and preparation for future employment.
From the start I was given a large amount of responsibility. The nature of the role meant large numbers of people and potential profit could be impacted by work. This helps personal development as you learn to deal with the stress and improve communication skills. However with responsibility support was given if required, just needed to ask.
The placement year has developed me as a person and will surely assist in my final year at university. For future employment it's great to have a large company and a year of experience on the CV so that is a plus. Some training was available but due to budget restraints most companies are experiencing I did have to work hard for it.
The Company
General atmosphere was very relaxed and laid back. Of course this could change if there were deadlines or issues but I quickly became used to this. Most people are happy to have a chat and assist you.
The work placement was well organized and issues quickly resolved. Despite previous years having some admin issues these now seem to have been resolved.
I attended one external course which was provided by the company. Several vendor meetings and social events were also available. One to one time with my line manager helped with personal development and future career options.

As a short term contractor the prospects are there but the future of the Graduate Scheme is uncertain as this time due to changes in the company.
The Culture
Social events were regularly organized and quite good. Everyone is free to arrange one and attendance is good.
Being London is was reasonably high but it wasn't impossible to live comfortably.
Again being based in London there is plenty for everyone to do, even with a range of different interests. Transport is also quite good.
There were opportunities to get involved with charity work and to assist in schools. This could be undertaken during a work day.
