The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my year and have spent my time on some really involving pieces of work and have learned a lot.
During my year I felt as though I were a valued part of the team. This developed throughout the year as I learned more about the shop and was able to perform more involving and complex tasks.
I feel that I was given the right amount of support during my placement. I was not constantly supervised and was given my own projects to manage but I was able to have support when I needed it.
At the beginning of the year I had a large amount of free time but as I was capable of doing more complex work I became busier.
I had some responsibility for my own projects but at times I did not feel as though I had much responsibility
I have developed a lot of skills this year (project planning, technical skills etc.). These are all skills that I will take with me back to university and my future career.
The Company
There was a friendly and laid back atmosphere in the office and on the shop floor. This made the year considerably more enjoyable without causing any distractions to my work.
Everything was very well organised apart from the first 2 weeks (handover period). I did not really gain any useful knowledge from this and I feel like this was a wasted opportunity. I have spoken with people at the company and have been told that this is an area that will improve in subsequent years.
I was placed on a number of training courses on technical and general skills. This includes Microsoft Office training, problem solving, presentation giving, PLC's and a large amount of software training. Nearly all of the training I received is transferrable to my future career.
The company currently has a recruitment freeze so a future career looks unlikely although the factory is looking to introduce a new vehicle in 2 years and it is speculated that there will be aditional vacancies created by this.
The Culture
Since there are around 80 different placement students, the social aspect of this placement is excellent. There is something happening nearly every weekend. The first two weeks is a handover period with the person you are replacing and there are social events most nights.
Luton is not too expensive although some of the other places in the nearby area can be quite expensive for a night out
Luton nightlife is not great although there are many places nearby with better nightlife.
There are a large amount of charity events and social events going on.
