The Role
Everyone was friendly and willing to help, and the work was challenging but rewarding.
I had meaningful input at all stages of the placement
While for the most part I was fairly self-directed, when I needed support my manager was very happy to help out.
There was a long-term project which I could plan my time for, meaning I was working at my own pace.
I had responsibility for my own code sections, working with a more experienced engineer overseeing the overall system.
The methods for professional development I learned (design patterns, unit testing etc) were invaluable for my final year project.
The Company
It was fairly quiet and sedate, but conversations were continually flowing during the day
There were no problems that I could see - expectations were always set up ahead of time for each task and stage.
There was a 1 week training course at the start, plus a buddy assigned to each of us.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I am returning as a graduate.
The Culture
Some colleagues were more engaged in social events than others
Average prices - but far less than London!
Birmingham has a huge number of pubs/bars/clubs
There were plenty of events, though it was difficult to know how to get involved sometimes
