The Role
The variety of work was probably the most wide ranging of any industrial placement available to undergraduate students. The responsibility given to interns is almost equivalent to graduates.
I felt extremely values by my colleagues as we were all the same age and had similar experiences. We all wanted to most out of the placement and the working attitude was exactly what I wanted and was expecting.
I was provided with much support at the beginning of the placement in regards to answering difficult customer queries.
The workload would vary greatly depending on the weeks. Sometimes, I would have a very large work queue (although still manageable) and sometimes I would feel more relaxed.
We were given as much responsibility as required. If we wanted to do more work, we could ask for it to learn as much as possible about NI products and programming techniques.
I have learnt invaluable skills in programming with a commercial software program that is being used more and more extensively in every industry due to its intuitive learning approach through graphical programming. I will be well placed to use the time management skills and multi-tasking in any industry and I have certainly become a more focussed, diligent learner, ready for a large project back at university.
The Company
Everyone would always have fun and take a little break for a chat. Everyone was relaxed but very hard working.
The majority of tasks and projects were very well organised.
The company invested a large amount of time and money in training at the beginning providing 2 months of intensive training in regards to NI software and hardware products, allowing us to service our customers to the best of our ability, across the whole spectrum of products.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
The future career prospects are potentially inviting however, they may not be exactly what I am looking for. However, I am open to an offer if one was to be presented.
The Culture
Depending on the weeks and amount of work/events taking place, social meetings outside of work would be arranged but Newbury itself is a quite town and so most people would just prefer to meet up for a casual drink or meal out.
I lived in a house of 3 and so the cost of living was cheap in comparison to university in my 2nd year.
The nightlife was very dull and this is people this is not a student town at all. It is full of older people who do not go out. This was really the only downside. But in regards to a work placement, you shouldn't really be going out very much as you are too busy!
They were opportunities if people organised events. if an event is organised the majority of people will turn up!
