The Role
It was good, although once established member of the team there were little challenging aspects to it.
Everyone was approachable, and I felt a strong part of the team
Eventually felt like I was just one of the employees rather than a placement student and got given similar responsibilities as everyone else.
Some days there was too much to do, other days there was far too little. Very unbalanced.
I established myself in the team early on, asking to have things demonstrated to me. From here I picked up things, offered to do the tasks and eventually received sole responsibility for tasks. Manager saw independent skills in people and assigned tasks accordingly.
Not so much technical skills, but the soft skills developed from being part of a team are invaluable. There was no training received, aside from learning as you went on the applications being used. I picked up a new programming language, though this was essential for the role I had. It also really helped in seeing theory and material from lecture be applied into real situations
The Company
Was easy to have a chat with anyone, and occasional social meetings after work.
It's not clear until the day you start where you'll be based within the department. Once you're there though, it's welcoming and enjoyable.
No training or development opportunities outside of my day-to-day tasks. Offer the ECDL free of charge, which I completed in a day.
Flexi Time
Above 25 days holiday
From my role within the organisation, I'd look elsewhere before wanting to go back there. It was brilliant in providing me with experience, but there are too little opportunities to progress.
The Culture
There are very few (5 of us during my year) and we were all on separate teams. We did the induction day together and after that met up occasionally for drinks after work or lunch.
North East is a very cheap place to live. Between £45-70 per week accommodation and prices in shops are generally cheaper than elsewhere
Newcastle City... what more needs to be added? 38,000 students in the area, a pub/club for every day of the year - literally
A few, but nothing to write home about.
