    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement has enabled me to determine my own future career path and will most certainly help in the future. However looking at the year as a whole it has been slightly disappointing. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer has the stranglehold over the market that it once did and there is a distinct lack of innovation within the company. Such a perception became patently obvious when looking at the Senior Management in my department and if I were to return to the Technology industry the opportunity to work at Google, Facebook & Apple would be far more appealing.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The nature of my job in Internal Operations meant that often my job was very repetitive and perhaps I was not given the chance to be valued fully by my colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a brilliant manager, as well as a fantastic and driven departmental manager who has volunteered to be my mentor going forward. In terms the support and guidance I was given I felt very lucky in comparison to the experience of other interns.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Varied hugely, however in the last 3 months of the internship the workload in my department for those in internal operations slowed significantly.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Given enough responsibility and pushed for more, however naturally the nature of any intern role means that you will obviously not be running the company!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My I.T & Business Reporting skills were helped immensely. However aside from that my role did not demand a particularly stringent skillset.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My particular department was seriously lacking in atmosphere compared to the rest of the company.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The University Staffing Team were only visible to all interns on 3 occasions in the year and communications were confusing, vague and often incorrect (causing multiple communications to be sent to clarify messages).

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In my experience there was very little investment in my personal development and training. However as a whole the o

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • At the start of my career I have a desire to work for a company who are pushing the boundaries at the top of their specific market. Unfortunately from my experience at Microsoft this year the company seems to be weak within the market and is being bettered by competitors such as Google, Salesforce, Samsung & Amazon.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Reading is very expensive considering the quality of the town.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
