The Role
Overall I really enjoyed my placement at Lockheed Martin, there is a friendly atmosphere and all the work carried out on site is very engaging and interesting.
My colleagues were all very supportive and approachable I felt like a real member of the team and was able to learn a lot from the people around me.
Generally I would have liked a bit more guidance throughout my placement as there wasn't really one point of contact for me to go to with problems (I believe this issue will be rectified for future interns). However my supervisors on various projects were willing to talk things through with me and help me out with my work.
Day-to-day I had lots of work to complete and various other responsibilities so I was kept quite busy and had to manage my time accordingly.
I felt like the work I did whilst I was on placement really contributed to the projects I spent my time on and I was also able to see how the end products themselves really benefited the customer.
I have learnt many skills on my placement that I would never have picked up from degree, mainly soft skills like how to communicate effectively in the work place but also important technical skills and how to properly present and structure my work. I have also learnt how to determine the best ways to tackle problems and this will definitely help me in my future career and my final year at University.
The Company
The atmosphere was fairly relaxed in the office with people chatting and having fun but they also knew when they needed to get their work done.
Overall the placement was organised quite well however some things needed a bit more thought and maybe monthly updates with a line manager could have been set up to iron things out. However again I think as this feedback has been passed on and this may not be a problem for future interns.
I was sent on at least one course at the beginning on my placement, however I would have liked to have had some more training during my time, the graduates there receieved quite a lot and I think it may have helped me to further improve during the year.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Near the end of my placement I was given a letter of intent offering me a graduate job providing I finish University with a 2:2 level degree or higher.
The Culture
There were lots of graduates and interns at Lockheed so lots of people to socialise with at lunch and outside of work and they are all very welcoming to new starters.
Average costs to live in bedford however slightly more expensive in Milton Keynes or the villages around Ampthil
The nightlife in bedford wasn't great but there was lots of people to go out with so it was still plenty of fun.
There was lots of stuff to get involved with outside of work including; volunteering, outreach, 24V car project, go- karting, running, football etc.
