The Role
The internship is split into two different seats and I absolutely enjoyed both. Linklaters seems to be very careful with the sort of people it employs and as a result everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Both of my principals made a real effort to make sure I had a lot of varied and interesting work. My advice for the scheme would be not to worry about it; I was absolutely petrified before I started the internship, I see now I had no need to be whatsoever!
Everyone was so welcoming-you will be invited to meetings and training along with other employees and (especially in smaller seats) you really feel like they value your presence and want to include you. Furthermore, everyone I did work for was incredibly grateful and I felt like I had really contributed, even in such a small period of time.
At the end of each seat your principal will give you an appraisal. Mine contained a lot of good advice for the future, however because the feedback (by nature) comes at the end, the period can feel a bit more like an assessment than an experience-as there were definitely circumstances where I would do something wrong but not get told until my appraisal.
If you sit in a busy seat you will get a lot of work and there were days when I was working flat out. However this is the best experience to get and looking back I realise that I had a really good insight into what it is like to be a lawyer with the firm.
In my experience I was given real work rather than work set for the sake of it. I even worked on some pieces that were to be sent to the client the next day which was both exciting and rewarding.
You will learn so much on this placement with regard to working with other people, using your intuition, managing your time/priorities etc.
The Company
Smaller seats tend to be a bit more relaxed whereas seats which are bigger and busier will be a lot quieter and intense so it depends on where you are. Having said that there is very much an open door policy at the firm and as such the atmosphere remains a friendly regardless of the work.
The team organise excursions, meals and group activities for everyone on the scheme and these were so much fun.
We had a lot of people (from senior partners to associates) take time out of their schedules to talk to us about various parts of the firm or the wider legal market.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
You are invited to a training contract interview with the firm after your internship - fingers crossed!
The Culture
I have made so many friends on the scheme.
I actually commuted from home so can not comment in terms of living (although commuting was expensive for me). In terms of socialising, Linklaters will pay for all the organised events which is really great.
You are really well placed and close to a lot of great things to do.
You have access to the gym and also to sports societies which operate within Linklaters.
