The Role
Fascinating industry and company. Really enjoyed learning throughout the year - you have the opportunity to learn so much. Only slight drawback is that being a defence company there is a lot of red tape and some tasks can be painfully slow to complete - causing unnecessary stress at times.
Very much so, my job (Communications and Business Development) involved interacting with all employees at the Ampthill site. The office was a lot of fun, and the employees on site help you where possible. I was given proper jobs / projects to work on and complete.
Good guidance to start with, but after a while you are left get on with it by yourself - probably the best method of learning.
Very busy, but fun, diverse activities - Some people thrive off this, some prefer a more structured role.
A lot. I was given events to manage, company communications to distribute and even mentored an employee into the company for the final 6 months.
My confidence has grown massively, as have my written and verbal communications. I hope that in the final year of university I can deliver strong presentations and write comprehensive essays.
The Company
Very fun group of people, but all quite senior in the company - this means that you can have serious conversations as well. A good balance.
The induction to the company worked well. However once there the placement didn't have much structure. This can be a benefit for some as it is very diverse and you have the opportunity to get involved in many tasks. You run your life more like a full time job than a structured intern year.
They gave interns the opportunity to go on training courses - this may be software or hardware based. However my favourite aspect was being allowed to go to the occasional conference to learn more about the industry and the competition in the market. This is all expensed for and well worth getting involved with. My favourites included the Lockheed Martin Technology Conference and the RUSI PONI Conference (Nuclear issues).

I have been offered to return to the company should the right job become available. It appears that interns are given this opportunity if they perform well over the year.
The Culture
I lived with 4 other interns and the graduates already employed add to a fun social life.
Fine, can live either lifestyle due to the area. London being on the doorstep can add to costs. Went to university in Newcastle which is much cheaper.
Due to the number of graduates at Lockheed Martin you can have a lot of fun. Bedford and Milton Keynes offer nights out (limited but they exist), London is on the door step.
Yes - I joined the Lockheed golf and football societies.
