The Role
The internship overall was a very fun experience, particularly since it gave me the opportunity to work abroad.
My colleagues valued having me there and were very friendly, however I didn't feel like a necessary part of the team. Many of my colleagues were also nervous to talk to me in English, which made it difficult at times to ask for help or socialise.
My mentor and managers gave me a lot of help whenever I required it. I sat close to my mentor so I was always able to ask him for help on the spot. If he wasn't there, he'd assign someone else to take his place.
I was often too bored, as the work I was given was sporadic and not particularly challenging. I had to spend a lot of time looking for more work to do or just doing nothing.
My work could easily have been done by someone else or not done at all, which made me feel that I had little responsibility
The knowledge I gained of the technologies in use at Samsung were really valuable and will definitely help me in my future studies.
The Company
While the office was often quiet, whenever a birthday or other event happened, everybody would be in high spirits. We also went once or twice a month for company dinners which were very fun.
The HR team did a very good job in setting up the framework, but my division really let themselves down, leaving me with little work to do.
The company offered Korean classes and also provided me with training for a variety of areas surrounding my central internship projects.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The Korean work culture can be difficult, particularly for foreigners. As such, I don't find the prospects too appealing. The division I worked in was in a somewhat poor situation too, meaning they were not looking to hire from placements.
The Culture
The students hung out every night and most teams had company dinners at least once a month which were really great.
The cost of living was fantastically low, and the company provided housing, travel and all meals eaten on campus.
The karaoke and other bars nearby were great.
There were company dinners, sports teams and other events which were easy to get involved with.
