The Role
The team I was working with and the people I spoke to and was interviewed by could not have a bad word said about any of them. They were all so friendly and made me feel really valued. The work I really enjoyed due to the breadth of work carried out and that I felt trusted by my colleagues to complete the work to a high standard.
The main reason I felt so valued was due to the fact that they trusted me to carry out tasks with a very quick brief. They felt confident enough that I knew what to do and so left me to carry it out and without any micro management. Their feedback was largely positive and any criticism was expressed in a constructive manner, which made me feel valued.
Initially I was given a lot of guidance on the first few days, which really helped me settle in. As time went on I was left more to my own devices however I always felt there was support there if I needed it, as everyone seemed happy to stop and take time to explain to you how to do something.
The only reason I was ever not busy was due to the technical nature of some of the work, and since I had no training in the accountancy field this prevented me from doing some work.
I was given a lot of responsibility in the way that I was left to carry out pieces of work without being micro managed and I was able to talk directly with the clients.
Definitely it made me realise what career path I will be talking following university.
The Company
I feel it would be unfair to comment on this as my time, due to the nature of Audit work, was spent at the clients office so therefore could not comment.
Very well organised there was lots of communication between myself and the HR department. I knew in advance what I would be doing each day and there was even the possibility to participate in corporate responsibility days before the beginning of my placement.
I had the feeling that I could acquire whatever I wanted from the experience. They were very open about whether there was any of areas I wanted to experience whilst I was there, and if you wanted more work then they would find you more to do.
Very appealing as the firm was so kind and they felt genuinely interested in me as a person. I could easily see myself returning to Grant Thornton in the future. The only negative for me was clients in the banking sector.
The Culture
I was not fortunate to experience any however I had the feeling there was a good social scene, both in the office and the training centre.
