The Role
I would recommend every student to do some kind of placement.
All the students were welcomed into the department and included in social activities. I felt listened to in meetings and was able to contribute as an equal.
I had regular meetings with my supervisor and if I had questions in other areas they could always put me in touch with someone to help.
At the start of the placement there were some days with not enough work to do. Occasional very busy days were mostly balanced out as my time management improved.
By the end of the year I was autonomously planning experiments and carrying them out, and being given the opportunity to train others in the skills I had learned.
The placement gave me the experience to make decisions for my career plans (I decided to apply for phds next year). The lab skills will also be valuable for my final year university project.
The Company
The social committee organised events and there was a friendly environment in the office
The company has a well established and good framework for setting up placements.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
There are opportunities to apply for fast track consideration for graduate schemes.
The Culture
There were lots of students on site and several in my department, there is also an industrial placement student union which organises social events.
Proximity to London makes transport and drinking/eating out more expensive
Stevenage itsself has little to no nightlife, however London is not too far away.
Not as wide a variety as at university but there were some activities
