The Role
The work placement at GSK was highly enjoyable, initially I was worried that I would have less responsibilities and work on menial tasks, however I am glad to say that I was wrong. Within 2 weeks of joining I was being placed onto projects to work on and over the year grew more independant and manage entire projects myself. I had a great support network and my manager and team all helped me when I needed and I can tell that I have developed both myself and my skills over the year.
When I had settled into the organisation and was actively working I felt more valued by my colleagues as they knew I was helping contribute. They started to rely on me more by asking my opinions and for advice.
The support I recieved was very good, I had my manager and Line manager there to discuss any issues with work, as well as a custodian and graduate mentor to discuss any other issues I faced whether it be work based or worries about my future career. Everyone was very experienced and helped my face and overcome any issues I had.
Overall I was constantly busy, when initially starting I had less workload but through the year I would say you have a steady stream of work with busier times in which you may have to stay a little late a few days to keep up or put in a few hours during the weekend.
I was very happy with the amount of responisibilty given to me, initially after gaining peoples trust they handed complete responsibility to me to deliver whole small projects as well as help them with smaller parts on their ones.
The only reason this section is not rated that high is due to my degree being highly technically focused and my placement being more business focused. With this contrast between them there are skills which I can take back to university about SQL, software and business knowledge, but it may not help me that much with my actual studies. However having looked at other students I can see that they will benifit greatly from their placement
The Company
Atmosphere was quite good, it was an open plan office so every now and again conversations would develop that kept the flow going and made everyone feel part of a team.
It was very well organised, there was training to do when first starting and meetings arranged so you would have a chance to get to meet and know everyone from the team to other students. Everything after that was structured with managers deciding and giving you options on what work you wanted to do.
Quite far, there was accredited training available for ITIL and Prince 2, as well as internal training to carry out.

Future employment prospects are good as they offer you a chance to apply for the graduate schemes.
The Culture
Yes, everyone got along well and usually there were events organised outside of work
Lived at home, so had to pay for travel to work. Near the HQ there are a few pubs and subways to go to if you get bored of the canteen.
Not a clue about locally, but with a nearby tube station it was easy to get to London and visit some other places.
Yes, there's always extra chances to take part in work and emails are handed out so you can join in
