The Role
Overall very challenging and rewarding.
One of the most friendly places to work, not only did I feel extremely welcomed but I felt trusted and valued.
My manager in particular took an active role in my personal development throughout the year, to make sure I can evolve and be the best I can be.
At times I would have been extremely busy, ensuring that I got the work done within deadlines. However, with this placement you really do talk to your manager and make sure you are getting the right balance.
I was responsible for large projects where I proposed my findings to VPs within the leadership team. I was given a lot of responsibility - a lot more that I ever thought I would!
I have learnt so much more skills within this one year placement then I believe I could ever have learnt during univeristy. These skills are invaluable, and I believe the soft skills a long with formal qualifications like ITIL will put me in a strong position for my final year at uni and also future job applications.
The Company
Relaxed working environment, no closed offices just smart working. Regular pub lunches and socials in London. Never a dull moment.
Could have been organised better, the previous placement students helped us with our transition when starting GSK - really did depend on how well the previous students in the department could 'hand-over'. There were induction sessions but I believe more support during the initial couple of months would have been beneficial.
I gained my ITIL foundation qualification, other colleages were put through expensive advanced Excel training if required. If there was a need, or you wanted to develop in an area training and development was encouraged.

Currently the IT graduate programme is under evaluation so it is slightly un-clear what the process will be when I apply. Other graduate programmes are very appealing with 8 month rotations and competitive salary.
The Culture
There was an independent programme at GSK called IP Unite, where there was a team of Industrial Placement students who would get together and organise socials. This was extremely effective. Socials included a boat party along the Thames, elite clubs in London and Firework nights.
As it was london it was extremely expensive.
London nightlife is pretty awesome.
There were sports clubs outside of work, I also cycled 28 miles for our 'Orange Day' where you take a day off work (still paid!) and do something for charity - that was pretty fun. Other than that I was involved in organising departmental events.
