The Role
It was a struggle at first but there are a lot of fantastic people in GSK and I connected with my mentor and made a lot of friends in GSK.
I felt more valued by colleagues outside of my team. GSK gives you the opportunity to network and meet people from all works of life who end up connecting with you and appreciating you for who you are.
I did not feel I had enough support from my manager int he first 6-7 months of my placement. My manager and I were polar opposite in personality. We were from two opposite cultures, she is British and I am African and I had to accommodate and respect her simply because that is what I have been taught to do. GSK is an organisation that believes in empowering its employees to be self starters and drivers of their own career, which is a great perspective and a fantastic idea. But a placement student is totally different from a permanent staff, we are not in GSK for the next 5 years, we are only there for a short space of time. I believe some managers struggle to adjust their way of thinking and working by offering more guidance and support by using coaching/mentoring skills when dealing with a placement student.
I found activities and task within my team and outside of my team to keep me busy as I was charged with administrative responsibilities 90% of the time.
Quite a lot. I was entrusted in taking care of my teams share point topic site.
I have learnt so much about myself during this 12 months.
The Company
It was relaxed but I brought in a bit of fun with my personality. The floor I worked on was divided into two spectrum. Half of the floor was serious and quite, the other half was relaxed, fun and serious.
I had to search for ways to develop myself. My mentor played a big part in pointing me in the right direction.
I attended lots of free seminars and workshops where I got a lot of online training and insights into how best to work with my team. I also learned a lot about myself through this seminars and workshops.

The Culture
Yes, GSK has a group called IP Unite which connect GSK IP's across the UK.
Didn't leave in the area as it was too expensive!! The cost was from £500 per month minus bill plus bills, the cost went up to £600-750 per month.
The feedback from the students I worked with was that they had to travel outside of the work area in other for them to find somewhere nice to unwind.
Yeah we have a lot of get together among the various groups across GSK.
