The Role
I enjoyed my placement immensely. I learnt so much and put so much theory into practice, I did not expect to have such a big learning curve and can believe how much GSK value the work of its placement students
Being a small team, getting along and working together was very important. My manager treat me like an experience IT professional and valued my opinions. We discussed work openly and worked together to devise plans. My customer group always made me feel very welcome and worked with me to develop my knowledge of their processes and in time them too valued my advice and counsel to them on their IT systems
I had an incredible manager that provided support and guidance when needed but also did not micro-manage. I felt very empowered in my role.
I was very busy once my initial induction period had ended, getting straight into projects and tasks. however I enjoyed this level of business as it meant I was NEVER sat around twiddling my thumbs. The demands of my customers were high and the ability to deliver on time and within budget was the expectation from the offset.
I felt I had a lot of responsibility. I was a fully accountably project manager for multiple projects and also took a programme manager role during the initiation phases of a programme of work. I was part of the IT strategy team and one of the business strategy teams for my areas as well as sitting on a service governance board.
Very much so. I feel that the theory was put into practice and I developed these skills as well as developing a whole new set of skills
The Company
GSK has adopted smart desking so the environment is open and friendly. It can be a little noisy and disruptive at times but there is ample meeting room space that can be booked.
Initially it seemed quite well, though sometimes it felt no one person had ownership of the scheme.
There were many developmental opportunities and GSK have their own e-learning that can be completed if you wanted to gain further knowledge.
