The Role
GSK is an excellent company to work for and I really enjoyed my placement for various reasons. One being the development and support from managers who are committed to helping you develop as a person. The people are super friendly here and the culture really is unique, it's a very transparent company and you can walk up to any managers and speak to them. We got to meet with senior VP's for coffee sessions and to gain an insight into their working day. The culture is also very relaxed and the facilities are world class. There was also a huge student community where I was based in the London sites which was great.
Everyone I have worked with have always been friendly and professional at GSK and I never had any problems with anyone.
Management were excellent in the support and development side of things. We were given the opportunity to gain industry recognized qualifications such as ITIL and had something called a PDP (personal development plan) which aims to steer your development over the year by stating your objectives and working towards them. Managers were always willing to meet up to talk about development opportunities and I am now using GSK for my final year project which my manager is going to support when I am back at university.
Sometimes I had very little to do, other times I had lots to do. People can sometimes be very slow at replying too meaning you are limited on what you can get on with. However, If you go out looking for work, for projects to get involved with then you will be given the opportunity. But if you sit and do your day to day role, then you may get bored..
I was given a fair amount of responsibility but I would have liked more in some areas.
Invaluable year in terms of development, skills gained, and network/contacts gained. Having GSK on my CV will be hugely beneficial for future employment and I believe the professionalism gained will help me excel in my final year.
The Company
Good general atmosphere, everyone is up for a laugh and no one is too serious at GSK, there are always social events going on and BBQ's outside in the summer, Nintendo wii tournaments etc.Everyone is approachable at all times too
Overall good. I was able to work from home sometimes and managers were generally OK with this given the reasons was legitimate
I did the ITIL training course which is a great CV builder, they also funded travel for going to student events and meetings in different locations across the country. I also got the opportunity to get involved in projects outside my area which was great for expanding my network and reaching out for varied development experiences and exposure

I can see myself working for GSK in the future, it's a great company to work for, the only bad parts are it is sometimes a very slow moving organisation due to the nature of the industry meaning you can sometimes get frustrated.
The Culture
Excellent social scene, events all the time, end of yearbook made, IP unite team just for organising social events, lots of after work drinks etc. Great company if you are a social bee.
I was based in the Brentford site which wasn't far from central London - so generally pretty expensive
Based in Brentfrod, so many great nightclubs in London if you are willing to travel back on the nightbus, other GSK sites are bad for nightlife though.
Yes lots with the social placement team putting on events, and after works drinks normally every Thursday. Lots of big events, christmas party, summer parties etc.
