The Role
I really enjoyed my time with Verizon. I found the internship was very inspiring and instructive. There was a well-balanced structure of long and short term projects and non-time sensitive background work, as well as time for personal development workshops and courses. I have seen myself evolving over the internship and I was able to gain a lot of knowledge which will be of help to me in pursuing professional opportunities after University.
Right from day one I was made to feel like a valued member of the Talent Acquisition team. There is certainly not a feeling of being a "student", but rather I was given responsibility and respect from the start.
The support by my management was just the right extent of supervision and independence working, very instructive and helpful.
The first couple of weeks were fairly quiet, but once I settled in and was set up on my projects there was always something to do.
I was fully responsible for the completion, outcome and delivery of several projects, but I always could count on advice and support from my team.
The teamwork, communication, time management, organisational and other skills that I developed during my period with Verizon will assist greatly in my studies and future career. The training I received via the online portal and different workshops, such as VLSS and Giving Presentations will also be a great advantage.
The Company
At the beginning I was a little overwhelmed of the extent of people working in my department, but the general environment was very friendly and collaborative.
The internship was very well organised including the different projects and number of training initiatives, as well as different intern meetings and Verizon leader conferences in order to give us the best insight of the company’s functioning. The buddy mentoring system was also a great support. However, the on-boarding process and induction period could have been improved in terms of time frame especially for 6 months of short internships.
Verizon invests a huge amount in training and development. There is an unlimited access to various courses on the online learning portal, which helps you to build on your competencies, refresh knowledge and acquire new skills. We had also access to get the PRINCE2 Foundation exam and ITIL Certificate (half) paid by the company.

I still have to figure out which business area to go in, but if it will suit with what Verizon offers, I would definitely come back as I think it is a great company to work for.
The Culture
We were a group of 10-15 UK interns at Verizon during the period of 6-12 months amongst different departments and the social scene was very good. We got on very well with each other and did several activities together during the week and on weekends. There was also a summer event sponsored by Verizon whereby we did a trip to London zoo.
I was living in London and commuting every day to Reading, so living costs were high compared to my home country, but lying inside of what you expect being the London area.
I cannot say much about the Nightlife in Reading, as I was not living there. You can find a lot of bars and pups around the town centre and at the end it depends anyway on what you personally make out of it. However, London is only a 30 minutes train journey away and offers plenty of Nightlife activities.
There were a number of activities outside work organised by the team to build up the environment such as leaving-dos, baby shower, team lunches & dinners etc.
