About You
The second week was much better than the first week which felt to drag slightly. Once we had the social on the Thursday, the group of vacation schemers were more sociable and this helped increase the enjoyment of the two weeks.
As a vacation scheme student it is hard to feel valued as the work you are able to do is not hugely beneficial. I was included where possible but there was not a hugely friendly atmosphere on my floor.
A lot. My supervisor was very good at offering me support. If I was unsure of a task he was more than willing to offer me advice.
It is a valuable insight into the legal profession and some of the resources and tasks I completed/used will be useful in later life. I think the key thing that I will take from the scheme is the requirement/skill to talk to partners and other people.
The Company
A good structure. It was maybe top heavy at the start of the week but overall everything ran seamlessly.
I don't think the social side of the scheme was as good as it could have been. Having the social on the Thursday night was too late in the week. Other schemes I have been on have the social on the Tuesday and this helps break the ice between the other people on the scheme and also between trainees and grad recruitement.
They took time to teach me how to do certain tasks. As there is a TC interview they clearly want you to develop and they do put a good amount of investment in.
I had the opportunity to speak to a lot of trainees who gave me an insight into what the day to day life of a trainee solicitor is.
I got a flavour of how the company was ran and the people who are working at the firm and the culture of it.
It reaffirmed that a career in law was what I wanted.
Everything Else
£250 per week. Less than another scheme I did but it seems to be the average for law firms.
We had talks from all the different levels of employee and had the chance to ask them questions. The NQ talk was particuarly useful as this is a talk I had never had before.
The events would get a 9/10. I really enjoyed both the cocktail making which was hands on and also the sit down meal which was a good event. However, I can only score this at a 7 as the first social was too late in the week and for me should have been on the Tuesday night to help integrate us into the firm more.
We had a CSR talk. I would have liked to hear more about trainee socials and the sports on offer.
Yes I would recommend it especially if they have not done a scheme at another firm. It gives a real life insight into a law firm and if slightly unsure of whether a career in law is suitable for them it will help resolve this issue.
