The Role
The requirements fitted my skill set precisely making it an ideal first stepping stone in the games industry. Which included mainly programming Flash applications using ActionScript 3 on a daily basis.
By the end of my placement I genuinely felt like I'd found my place within the company and me and my close colleagues had a great rapport.
Even though I entered the company at a transitional period where a change in managers was taking place, at no point was this a negative thing. In fact I found my new manager was just as friendly and supportive as the previous one which made the transition between the two more than easy.
I found the company was able to scale my work load with ease to match my skills. At the beginning I was given simple non-critical jobs to test my metal, but as soon as they saw my potential I was given real responsibility and projects with consequences.
Initially not so much as with any job, but by the end of the placement I had been the lead on many projects such as games that were actual release titles that would be going out to the operators in a matter of months.
Most of the skills I've gained during my placement relate to working within a functioning team, all of the technical skills I gained were small tweaks to my workflow. Most programming languages I had researched and used before in my own time, if I was learning something new I had to research it on the fly while getting the job done.
The Company
The atmosphere was lovely at the office there was fresh fruit put out twice a week, and cake and treats for every occasion; leaving, joining, anniversaries and birthdays. Often teams that had worked on key projects would be given the opportunity to go out for a meal expenses paid.
Relatively well, the projects were thought up on the go to meet the current requirements and voids at the company. Not to say this is a bad thing it's just the way things had to be done, and to compensate for the never ending influxes of unpredictable circumstances.
They gave me an opportunity to work in a successful company using the best of my skill set. Which in this economical climate is a rare occurrence. So for that I'm extremely thankful for them to take me under their wing and invest time and money in me as a developer.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Very good, I've been in talks with them discussing my future part-time employment that I can do during my third study year at university. After that they've expressed an interest in me joining their mobile team which I've wanted to do ever since it opened up at the company during my placement.
The Culture
Everyone at the company is lovely and in my team and others they'd often go for meals together on Fridays. Also at 5PM every Friday the company convenes to partake in some beverages and snacks provided by the company to give the week an overview together.
London is extremely expensive if you don't come from a wealthy background such as myself and on the salary I was on it was a bit of a tight squeeze. However if you live close by the commute isn't too bad, and if you put the time in to finding a place that meets you lifestyle and financial needs you'll eventually find one.
I'm not really into "nightlife" so I wouldn't know or care, but it's London so I assume you can expect lots of expensive bars and nightclubs are available to you on every corner.
There were four events outside of the company I was given the opportunity to take part in these were "Reasons to be Creative", an Xmas Party, the ICE Conference, and the Royal Ascot. Most of which I enjoyed.
