About You
It confirmed my interest in commercial law
The team made me feel relaxed and welcome- many people came up and chatted to me at my desk and introduced themselves throughout the 2 weeks.
Having a trainee buddy was invaluable.
I have developed skills which differ from those I practice in university which will aid me in a legal career in the commercial sector.
The Company
The practice presentations each morning added structure to the week, and the work I was given was largely structured and progressive.
Everybody in the office was approachable, and I liked the freedom I had to prioritise my own work.
I felt the trainees have already developed our skill sets in unerstanding the importance of the client. The firm is clearly keen to recruit the best students it can and this process begins personal development within the firm.
Two weeks gives you plenty of time to assess the working environment and the workload expected in the firm.
The best way to gain insight into what it is like to work at a firm is to have a strong understanding of its culture. I was introduced to many people at different levels; the positive attitudes of the senior lawyers helped me understand that the firm's values really are incorporated into its culture.
This first-hand experience was invaluable in encouraging me to pursue a career in commercial law.
Everything Else
The expenses system was efficient and accurate.
I was able to meet the trainees on a regular basis at socials, and a range of lawyers at hockey matches and office drinks. The partner lunch was valuable as it allowed me to understand what the firm is like from the most senior lawyers.
As previously mentioned, these events opened up opportunities to talk to lawyers in other practice areas to get an idea of their projects, interests and working lives.
There were plenty of sporting opportunities to become involved with- I really enjoyed participating in the hockey match. There were also drinks events, demonstrating the firms sociable nature.
To anyone interested in commercial law, this placement was invaluable experience.
