The Role
I had a great year and it really helped me develop my skills and narrow down where to steer my career path.
Friendly department, I was incorporated as part of the team.
People were always willing to take some time to help me out with something or explain. Compared to University I had SO much more personal support and guidance ... and I was being paid rather than paying.
It was variable, some weeks could be very busy - finishing work late, others I felt I had little to do. Although I think this is the nature of project-based work (compared to task-based).
Initially of course my time was more directed and my responsibilities were gradually increased as I learnt more things and became more competent. I would be given a project and then was expected to organise the various steps myself with my supervisor checking in that everything was ago, at the same time I never felt like I couldn't ask for help if I was struggling.
Whilst what I was doing on my placement doesn't relate that specifically to my degree I was given my own research project on the placement, the skills of doing this will be very helpful for my final year.
The Company
The organisation takes many students every year and have been for many years.

Unclear, although I get the impression having worked for the company for a year puts you in a good position for graduate opportunities.
The Culture
Lived with other students so we would frequently socialise together. With colleagues it was mostly a bit more formal: team-dinners, company events etc.
In-line with the rest of the south-east of England, not as expensive as London but if you haven't lived in the south-east or London before you will probably be a bit shocked. Worked next to the University so some things were a bit cheaper there.
Okay but nothing special ... from the train station you can be in central London in half an hour though!
Organising social events and the company is quite active in charity/community activities.
