About You
As expected the atmosphere was friendly and supportive which made me feel more at ease and valuable to the teams, making the placement more enjoyable.
From the feedback I received I felt that the work I did had been useful to them and so I had made a valuable contribution.
Someone was always willing to answer my questions on the work I had been set and I found that it was always explained well to me before I began the task.
As a law student, I will be studying modules relating to the departments which I sat in, and so can put some of the things I learned into practice.
The Company
It was excellent. The 'focus on' sessions were particularly useful in giving me an insight into the work of other departments, and opened my eyes to interesting practice areas which I had given little thought to before the Vacation Scheme.
Everyone was friendly, willing to help and easy to talk to.
My supervisors were both keen for me to ask questions to ensure that I properly understood the work, and all members of the departments would make sure that I had enough work to be getting on with.
The work I was given was that which a trainee would be involved in, so this was an excellent insight. There were also plenty of opportunities to talk to trainee buddies about their work and life at the firm, and also supervisors which was excellent for better understanding the different roles and career progression at the firm.
It was clear that while there is an open door policy and everyone was willing to help me and answer my questions, it is a very hard working firm. However, it isn't all work and there is time for fun and to socialise.
Since I was carrying out and enjoying the work of a trainee, it made me sure that I would enjoy this career full time and that I am choosing the right career path.
Everything Else
The pay was competitive compared with other similar schemes
We were encouraged to introduce ourselves to all of the employees in our departments each work, as well as speak to people around the firm for our presentation preparation. In addition there was opportunity to network at the socials, in particular a firm wide social which the Vacation Scheme students were invited to.
There was a good range of social events - a meal out, going to a comedy club and after work drinks. It provided an opportunity to have fun but was also a useful way to speak to more employees from around the firm.
Each work there was a team going to Hyde park to play sports which were invited to get involved in, and the firm offers opportunities to get involved in pro bono work.
It was an excellent insight into the particular firm and also to the work of a commercial solicitor generally when I had no previous experience. I felt really welcomed at the firm and was given plenty of responsibility. All in all a brilliant two week placement.
