The Role
There was a good mixture of both office work and getting out and about working on cars.
Colleagues actively looked to keep me busy with real tasks and were both genuinely supportive and appreciative of the work I had done.
Despite being a very busy man my manager often made time to sit me down and explain things. Which was particularly helpful as I knew nothing about the area I had been placed in.
The vast majority of the time I had things to be getting on with since I had a split work load between two sides of the team. On the other hand the were times where I was a little unclear which side I should be prioritising.
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility. For example, I was left to install parts and set-up hardware on engineering test cars without supervision. Had I done this wrong I could easily bring the car down.
It is unlikely to help my degree as it was mostly electronics and programming which isn't really much to do with mechanical engineering. I guess, however, it was helpful in the sense of seeing how to conduct ones self in business and showed me that I can still turn my hand to most things.
The Company
Friendly. People would bring in cakes to share and take coffee breaks to the onsite subsidised Costa.
No complaints here really. A facebook page was created for interns and we all had a department champion that could be spoken to if our managers weren't fully utilising us or if we were unhappy. The only slight annoyance was that we didnt get paid for the first 5 weeks which made money kinda tight!
We are given £150 toward training whilst on placement. This can be anything from welding to off-road driving (Land Rover Experience) to language classes.

I will definitely apply and I have an advantage because of my placement. As far as I understand it provided my manager gives me the nod then I get straight to a reduced assessment centre. My slight reservation is that while I really enjoyed my time here I don't know if I like the products. I guess I have some thinking to do but at least I'm one step closer to a good grad job!
The Culture
YES. We ate lunch together at work. Many people lift shared to get to/from work. Most of us lived together in halls. Went out together every weekend. And it wasn't a small group either.
The first while things felt expensive as you had to work 5 weeks before a pay check! But once you were paid it was easy to get by.
Coventry isn't the nicest of cities but Kasbah was good for letting loose at the end of the week. Leamington is MUCH nicer. But more expensive for a night out (mostly due to taxis). So in other words you have both ends of the scale. Plus living in the halls in Coventry, there was a decent cheap pub literally across the road. Not too shabby.
Most nights there was something to do with other interns. My team also had a monthly pub visit and my manager had a barbecue after our offsite meeting.
