The Role
Overall, I enjoyed the location, the people, and the company as a whole. The actual work fell somewhat flat for me at times, but that is to be expected for such a short internship.
Became friendly with everyone in the workplace. Felt like they really enjoyed having me around.
My managers have always been very understanding. I had injured both of my feet, so my manager took a full half hour to show me to the Occupational Health department personally. On another occasion, I had to miss a day of work to resit an examination. My manager could see that this was frustrating to me, and insisted that I would be paid for the day regardless.
I was tasked with the same short and repetitive activity for over a month of the placement. This became frustrating. I did, however, balance it out with more interesting activity once every couple of days.
Although the aforementioned repetitive activity was very dull, it was also quite important. I was eventually given scope to improve the process when the activity evolved slightly at about 5 weeks in.
The actual work did not enrich my skill set much. However, learning professional conduct and all the little intricacies about a corporation will set me in good stead for future opportunities.
The Company
Business protection came across as being quite authoritarian on the induction day. This turned out to be an exaggeration. Although a policy of company secrecy is maintained constantly, the office is definitely more of a democracy than a dictatorship.
This company take on a large number of interns. Accounting for that, the organisation is typically done rather well. However, there are often lulls in mutually useful activities available.
Training days are made available but aren't not enforced. I like the system as an idea, but didn't really check it out properly.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Healthcare from home
Provided my work diversifies, this would be a great place to work!
The Culture
A lot of us stayed in student halls and basically lived out Uni Part II. I tended to keep to my room however. I find the weather here too hot in summer and my room offers protection.
Apparently, pretty standard.
Wouldn't know.
Many. The company subsidise an Employee learning scheme with many registered activities. Even without the companies help, there is still a lot to do around here.
