The Role
They welcomed all the interns and gave them the opportunity to expand their experience of the city beyond their chose position. I particularly loved the responsibility and the duties given to me by the Compliance department.
They were very friendly and ensured that understood the work I was doing and never failed to keep me occupied.
I also knew if I had a problem or was unclear to what my work entailed I could go to them for guidance without feeling I was being a nuisance.
A little bit slow at the start but, by the end I didn't have a minute to spare
RBC wanted us to experience the true ins and outs of the departments we wanted to be placed in, so we could make a informed decision to whether it was the future we wanted. Unlike some placements RBC did not give us general office duties to carry out but ensured we gained a true sense of the work completed by those working there currently.
Prior to the internship, I had not considered Compliance an area of employment where I may later go into however, since doing so I now have a real interest. The placement has widened my knowledge of FSA regulations furthermore, the drafting of company policy has helped me to write better legal essays at uni. In addition, the presentation we completed has lifted my confidence. Overall, my oral and written have improved which has proved invalueable in legal writing. RBC also provided us with training on the SPOT desk again showing that they were dedicated to expanding our knowledge of the financial sector.
The Company
Quiet at times but in general very comfortable.
They ensured we had an introduction to our departments and bank as a whole. As well as allocating us with a go-to person, they arranged networking activites for us to be involved with and gave internal presentations of the capital markets and wealth management aspects of the company.
They continued to ensure I was occupied and happy. They have also made it clear if in the future we need help or would like to return they would do their best to make it happen.
Company Parties/Events
We have seen examples of past interns returning therefore, I would be confident in saying that those who wanted to return could.
The Culture
Grew very close to those on the internship, some of which I remain friends with. There was a real mix of students all of whom were a strong support network to the others.
As I live in London no expense applies here however, socialising in the city can be rather expensive in relation to the rest of London for example food and drink were often more expensive.
I didn't experience much nightlife on my placement but, of the social and networking events they organised they were very well prepared and were fun.
There were numerous networking events in which RBC organised. These occassions made us more confident in approaching those that we did not know, this in particular can further careers in the city.
