The Role
I found my placement very enjoyable as the work was something that I am really interested in and I felt as though I was learning every day.
Despite the fact that I had very little prior knowledge of auditing, I felt valued by my colleagues, as they were always happy to help by answering my questions and they were giving me work which challenged me.
During my time at KPMG, I met quite a few members of senior staff who were all more than willing to give me advice on how to do well in the industry and what it is like to work full time for KPMG.
As I was part of a smaller team on my internship at KPMG, I was always kept busy as there was a lot of work to do. It was not though to the extent that I could not handle the work, as I was regularly being checked on to make sure that I was keeping up okay.
One of the aspects of life at KPMG which pleasantly surprised me was how much responsibility I was given on my placement. An example of this was the importance of the work I was being given, which even though it was checked over thoroughly after completion by senior staff, the fact that I was trusted with work which actually meant something, made me feel valued.
I believe that I learnt a lot whilst on my placement at KPMG. I feel as though I gained a lot of self-confidence through the internship, as I was made to feel valued, which can only benefit me in the future. I also learnt a lot about auditing, which being so closely linked to my degree can only help me with my studies.
The Company
In the office the general atmosphere was good, in terms of the fact that it was sociable, but not to the extent that no work was getting done.
The whole internship scheme at KPMG was very well set-up, with the induction being well organised and throughout whole actual placement I always knew where I was supposed to be or what I was supposed to be doing.
I felt as though the company did invest a lot in me, mainly due to the fact that I learnt so much on the placement, both in terms of actual industry knowledge and personal development.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
At the end of the placement at KPMG I had to do a further interview and presentation with a partner, which I was made well aware of in advance. After completing this successfully I was told that I would receive a job offer to start full-time when I graduate, which I then accepted. This made the placement feel that much more worthwhile, as now in my final year at university I do not have to worry about finding a job for when I graduate.
The Culture
The social scene at KPMG was good, as there were a lot of organised events, ranging from team building days to just going for a social drink. It was not though over the top, as it did not hinder my work.
As I was working in the heart of London, it clearly was never going to be cheap, but the fact that my lunch, even when I was at a client, was subsidised, made it much easier to cope.
Around Canary Wharf there is a good variety of pubs.
KPMG offer all employees the opportunity to take part in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Days, which involve helping the local community. As well as this there are organised team building days.
