About You
The placement was very enjoyable, giving me an excellent insight into life as a commercial lawyer. I received a good variety of work, and was able to get involved with a variety of deals for different clients.
A real effort was made to ensure that I was integrated into the team. Everyone made time to check on my progress and offer guidance, and I was given feedback on all the work that I completed.
Every member of my department made an effort to introduce themselves and regularly check on my progress, giving feedback where necessary. Any work that I was delegated would be accompanied by a detailed explanation, explaining why the work was necessary and giving a bit of background information. Every member of the team from the partners down were happy to take time out and speak to me about their work, and my trainee 'buddy' and my mentor were always on hand should I need assistance.
Working in the office have given me a more rounded view of law, and put much of the university work into context. Understanding the practical application of the work will be of benefit to my academic career.
The Company
It was clear that the graduate recruitment team had worked hard to ensure that the placement was excellently structured. From the initial integration into the firm to the well organised socials, everything ran smoothly. The placement was structured to give us significant desk time, and that was useful as I was able to get involved with a good number of tasks. The morning presentations on the firms different practice areas were very useful, as I was very unfamiliar with a number of the areas discussed.
The placement struck a good balance between experiencing the work of the firm and the social side. There was a weekly social event, as well as the opportunity to go out for lunches with members of the department. I was also able to take part in a 5 a side football tournament for 'client relation' purposes!
The firm offered a good level of training in the induction days, as well as giving us the daily practice area presentations.
I was able to assist in active cases, with many of the tasks delegated by my trainee 'buddy', so the work was often of a similar standard to what would be expected of a trainee.
The three weeks within the firm allowed me to get an excellent 'feel' for the firm. I was encouraged to take part in all the social events, such as office drinks, dress down days and departmental lunches.
The experience has convinced me that I am pursuing the correct career path.
Everything Else
I was paid a fair wage for the time and work undertaken.
The firm organised a number of networking events for the summer students to meet the other trainees and the partners of the firm. Office drinks and sporting events were also good ways to meet other members of the firm.
There was a number of good opportunities to network within the firm, as detailed above.
The firm offers a number of extra curricular activities. While I was unable to experience all of them, I was made aware of their existance.
The placement is well structured, and gives the opportunity to get involved with some good work.
